About the event

Durga Puja at the Ramakrishna Math holds deep spiritual significance, rooted in the teachings and life of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who himself was an ardent devotee of the Divine Mother. The celebration is marked by intense devotion, simplicity, and adherence to traditional rituals, embodying the essence of Shakti worship in the Ramakrishna Order.

The festival typically spans five days—Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, and Vijayadashami—each filled with elaborate rituals, prayers, and offerings to the goddess Durga. The atmosphere is one of serenity and contemplation, with the monks and devotees immersing themselves in devotional singing (bhajans), scriptural readings, and meditation.

A unique aspect of Durga Puja at Ramakrishna Math is the emphasis on spiritual purity and inner transformation. Unlike the more exuberant public celebrations seen in many parts of India, the puja here is more introspective, focusing on the internal worship of the Divine Mother. The rituals are conducted with meticulous care, following the guidelines laid out by Sri Ramakrishna himself and later institutionalized by Swami Vivekananda and other direct disciples.

The image of Durga worshiped at the Math is often crafted with a simple yet majestic appearance, reflecting the order's principle of simplicity and devotion. The rituals involve chanting of mantras, offering of flowers, fruits, and sweets, and the performance of arati (waving of lights) to the goddess.

Durga Puja at the Ramakrishna Math also symbolizes the victory of good over evil, purity over impurity, and spiritual wisdom over ignorance. The festival concludes with the immersion of the idol, symbolizing the cyclical nature of life and the eternal presence of the Divine Mother in the universe.

For devotees, this celebration is not just a cultural event but a profound spiritual experience, offering an opportunity to deepen their connection with the Divine and to seek the blessings of Durga for strength, wisdom, and spiritual growth.
